How We Review Gift Card Trading Platforms

Last updated 21 Sept 2026

GiftCardNigeria funds and conducts real trades on the platforms we review. We record the rates offered, how long each stage takes, what the platform requires from a customer, and what happens when a trade does not go as planned.

Our scores reflect documented testing cycles. They may change when we retest a platform, receive new evidence, or update the scoring weights used across the website.

Our approach

Our reviews begin with first-party testing. We do not build scores from advertised rates, anonymous claims, or information copied from other websites.

Every review follows the same core process:

  • We fund the gift cards used for testing.

  • We record each trade attempt in a structured log.

  • We retain successful, failed, rejected, and pending attempts.

  • We support our findings with timestamps, screenshots, and researcher notes.

  • We separate measured facts from editorial judgement and third-party opinions.

  • A second team member fact-checks the evidence before publication.

GiftCardNigeria operates as an independent editorial publication. Reviewed platforms do not fund our tests, preview our reviews, approve our verdicts, or negotiate their scores. A platform cannot pay to receive a higher ranking.

How we select platforms

We consider gift card trading platforms that serve Nigerian users and can be tested through their official website or app.

Selection may depend on:

  • Availability to customers in Nigeria.

  • Support for gift cards relevant to Nigerian sellers.

  • Public visibility and reader interest.

  • Whether the platform is operational during our testing period.

  • Whether enough verifiable information is available for a responsible review.

Being included on GiftCardNigeria is not an endorsement. It means we have gathered enough evidence to publish a review.

A platform’s absence from the website does not automatically mean that it is unsafe or unsuitable. It may simply mean that we have not completed the required test.

What a testing cycle means

A testing cycle is a controlled review period containing one or more trade attempts and supporting checks.

The Test Lead assigns platforms to researchers and supplies the gift cards used for the trades. GiftCardNigeria pays for these tests. Researchers normally conduct trades between 9am and 6pm West Africa Time so that timing comparisons are made within a consistent operating window.

Platforms are not notified before a test. This helps us observe the experience available to an ordinary customer rather than a specially prepared account.

Several researchers or transactions may contribute to one testing cycle. At the end of the cycle, an editor reviews the eligible evidence and creates one append-only test record for the platform.

The latest published test record determines:

  • The platform’s visible scores.

  • Its overall score.

  • Its position in calculated rankings.

  • The “Last tested” date shown on its review.

Previous records remain stored for historical reference. A new cycle creates a new record rather than replacing the old one.

Our testing process

1. We prepare the test

The researcher first confirms that they are using the platform’s official website or app.

Before trading, we record information such as:

  • Website and app availability.

  • Sign-up requirements.

  • Supported gift cards.

  • Minimum and maximum trade values.

  • Available payout methods.

  • Stated fees or deductions.

  • Identity-verification requirements.

We then select the gift card type, region, format, and denomination for the test.

These details matter because the rate for a physical American Apple card, for example, may differ from the rate for an e-code or a card issued in another country.

2. We create and verify the account

The researcher records the information required to open an account and complete any applicable Know Your Customer checks.

This can include:

  • Name and contact information.

  • Bank details.

  • Bank Verification Number or National Identification Number.

  • Government-issued identification.

  • Selfie or facial verification.

  • Account tiers and their associated limits.

We measure how long verification takes and assess whether the instructions are clear.

A platform does not receive a higher score simply because it asks for fewer identity checks. We assess whether its process is understandable, proportionate, consistent, and functional.

3. We submit the trade

Before submission, we record:

  • Gift card type and region.

  • Card format.

  • Denomination.

  • Displayed rate.

  • Expected payout.

  • Applicable fees or deductions.

  • Submission time.

We also capture the rate screen and submission confirmation.

The displayed rate is not always the final rate. Where possible, we compare the amount advertised before submission with the value actually received after the trade.

4. We track confirmation

We record when the platform confirms, rejects, or leaves the trade pending.

This allows us to calculate how long confirmation took and examine how clearly the platform communicated each status change.

When a trade is rejected, we look for an explanation and a clear next step. We do not automatically treat every rejection as a platform failure. The card, image quality, card balance, researcher error, or another external issue may be responsible.

5. We track payment

For a completed trade, we record when payment reaches the selected payout destination.

We calculate:

  • Time from submission to confirmation.

  • Tested payout time: the time from submission until the trade is completed and the trade value is credited.

  • Bank withdrawal time, where the balance is later withdrawn to a bank account: the time from requesting the withdrawal until the money arrives. This is recorded separately and does not determine the Payout Speed score.

Where the evidence allows, we distinguish between processing time controlled by the platform and a delay caused by an external bank or payment service.

Only completed trades receive a measured payout duration. We do not turn a failed or pending trade into a fictional payout time.

6. We test support

During each testing cycle, the researcher sends the same neutral support enquiry. We record:

  • Support channel used.

  • Time of contact.

  • First-response time.

  • Whether the response addressed the question.

  • Whether follow-up was required.

  • Time to resolution where applicable.

If a genuine problem or dispute occurs during a trade, we record that interaction separately. A real dispute may reveal more about support quality than a routine enquiry, but we do not deliberately create false disputes.

7. We close the record

Every attempt is marked as Completed, Failed, Pending, or Disqualified.

The researcher adds relevant notes, uploads timestamped evidence, and submits the record for editorial review.

Failed and disqualified attempts are not deleted from the log. They remain available to the editor and fact-checker.

What we record

Area

Information recorded

Account and KYC

Sign-up requirements, documents requested, verification time and instruction clarity

Trade

Gift card type, denomination, displayed rate, fees, submission time and confirmation time

Payment

Payout method, confirmation duration, tested payout time and, where applicable, bank withdrawal time

Support and evidence

Contact channel, first response, resolution, trade status, researcher notes and screenshot references

Times are standardised to West Africa Time. Durations are converted into consistent units before they are compared or published.

How we treat failed and pending attempts

A platform must have at least one completed trade before we can publish a scored review.

A failed, rejected, blocked, or pending attempt does not satisfy that requirement. However, it remains part of the research record and may affect relevant scores when the evidence connects the outcome to the platform.

For example:

  • Unclear rejection messages may affect Trade Experience.

  • An unresolved complaint may affect Support and Disputes.

  • Repeated technical failures may affect Product Quality.

  • Serious account-access concerns may affect Security and Trust.

We first investigate the cause. Card problems, incorrect submissions, unreadable images, bank delays, and researcher mistakes must be separated from failures attributable to the platform.

Where useful, the review states how many attempts were completed, failed, rejected, or remained unresolved during the testing cycle.

Evidence and privacy

We may capture:

  • The rate screen before submission.

  • Submission confirmation.

  • Trade-status updates.

  • Rejection or pending messages.

  • Payout notifications.

  • Relevant support exchanges.

  • Timestamps linked to the trade log.

Selected evidence may appear in a review after it has been checked and redacted.

We remove or conceal:

  • Gift card numbers, codes, and PINs.

  • Personal information.

  • Bank and account details.

  • Private transaction identifiers.

  • Login and authentication information.

Unredacted evidence is restricted to the internal research, editorial, and fact-checking process.

How scoring works

We score each platform across ten dimensions. Each dimension uses a 1 to 100 internal scale. The weighted result is divided by ten and displayed publicly as a score such as 7.9 / 10.

The ten dimensions are:

  1. Gift Card Rates

  2. Payout Speed

  3. Trade Experience

  4. Support and Disputes

  5. KYC and Onboarding

  6. Product Quality

  7. Other Features

  8. Security and Trust

  9. Reputation

  10. App Reviews

Current weights come directly from the website’s scoring settings and must total 100%. The live table below shows the weights currently used.

Changing the weights recalculates overall scores and rankings across the website. Editors cannot manually place a platform in a preferred ranking position.

If a platform does not have a mobile app, it is not assigned a zero for App Reviews. That dimension is excluded and the remaining weights are adjusted proportionally.

Understanding the scores

Internal score

What it means

90–100

Exceptional performance supported by strong evidence

80–89

Strong performance with limited weaknesses

70–79

Good performance with some meaningful trade-offs

60–69

Acceptable but inconsistent

40–59

Weak performance with material concerns

20–39

Poor performance or repeated serious problems

1–19

Severe failure across the available evidence

These bands explain the general meaning of a score. Each dimension also has its own evidence requirements.

The ten scoring dimensions

Gift Card Rates

We consider the rate offered or received for the exact gift card tested, including its brand, region, denomination, format, and testing period.

We also account for fees, deductions, and differences between the displayed rate and final value received.

Rate comparisons use equivalent card categories tested within a comparable period. We do not compare unrelated cards as if their market values were the same.

Payout Speed

Tested payout time runs from gift-card submission until the trade is completed and the trade value is credited. We use this duration to calculate the Payout Speed score. If the user later withdraws the balance to a bank account, we record that bank withdrawal time separately.

Confirmation time may be recorded separately where available. Bank withdrawal time does not determine the Payout Speed score. Repeated delays can affect the score, but only completed trades receive a tested payout time: a failed, rejected, or pending attempt is never given an invented duration.

Trade Experience

This dimension covers the process of completing a trade, including:

  • Finding the correct card category.

  • Understanding the instructions.

  • Submitting the card.

  • Following status updates.

  • Receiving error or rejection explanations.

  • Knowing what to do next.

A fast trade can still provide a poor experience if the process is confusing or important information is hidden.

Support and Disputes

We consider support availability, first-response time, usefulness, resolution time, escalation options, and the handling of genuine disputes.

A quick automated response does not receive the same consideration as a response that addresses and helps resolve the issue.

KYC and Onboarding

We examine the clarity and consistency of account creation and identity verification.

This includes processing time, document requirements, account tiers, limits, error handling, and communication.

The score reflects the quality of the process, not whether the platform asks for fewer documents.

Product Quality

We assess whether the platform’s website and apps allow users to complete the advertised trading process reliably.

We consider stability, transaction tracking, status visibility, broken features, repeated errors, and consistency across the available devices we tested.

Other Features

We consider supporting features that are genuinely useful to gift card sellers. These may include rate calculators, rate alerts, wallet controls, withdrawal options, and relevant account-management tools.

A long feature list does not automatically earn a high score. The features must be relevant, usable, and functional.

Security and Trust

This dimension covers observable account protections and trust signals, including:

  • Authentication controls.

  • Account and transaction notifications.

  • Official support channels.

  • Accessible privacy and legal information.

  • Transparent fees and trading limits.

  • Handling of suspicious activity or account-access issues.

GiftCardNigeria does not perform penetration testing and does not certify any platform as completely secure.

Reputation

We examine recent patterns across credible external sources, repeated complaint themes, platform responses, operating history, and significant unresolved concerns.

One anonymous complaint, positive review, or viral post does not determine the score.

Third-party information provides context. It does not replace our first-party testing.

App Reviews

Where a platform has App Store or Play Store data, the rating is converted to a 100-point scale. When both stores are available, their ratings are weighted by their respective review counts.

Recent review text may be summarised separately to identify common praise and complaint themes.

App reviews remain third-party opinions. They do not replace our own test results.

How we combine measurements and judgement

Our scoring system uses a hybrid rubric.

Direct measurements carry the most weight when comparable figures exist. Rate comparisons use equivalent cards and testing periods. Speed comparisons use completed trades and standardised durations.

Qualitative dimensions use a documented evidence checklist. Editors may apply judgement within that framework, but researcher notes cannot override recorded measurements without supporting evidence.

Every score must be traceable to the latest testing-cycle record.

Fact-checking before publication

Every published review has a writer and a separate fact-checker.

The fact-checker examines:

  • Trade logs.

  • Timestamps.

  • Screenshots.

  • Calculations.

  • Platform facts.

  • Published claims.

  • Internal and external links.

  • Author attribution.

The writer and fact-checker cannot be the same person.

A platform review cannot be published without at least one completed trade, a named writer, and a different named fact-checker.

Reviewed platforms do not preview or approve our reviews before publication. They cannot change a verdict or score simply because they disagree with it.

Retesting and updates

Every published platform is due for retesting within 90 days.

The latest test date appears on the review. When a record becomes older than 90 days, it is flagged as overdue until a new testing cycle is completed.

We may retest earlier when we receive evidence of:

  • Material rate or fee changes.

  • Significant changes in payout performance.

  • A major product redesign.

  • A change in ownership or operating status.

  • A security incident.

  • An extended service outage.

  • A credible pattern of new complaints.

  • A published fact that may no longer be accurate.

A retest creates a new record. It does not erase the previous testing history.

Corrections and challenges

Readers and reviewed platforms may submit factual correction requests after publication.

A request should identify the disputed claim and provide supporting evidence. We check that evidence against our records and any current information available.

When we confirm a material error, we correct it promptly. A visible update note may be added when the change could affect how readers understand the review.

A score is not changed merely because a platform objects to the result. When a disputed claim concerns current performance, a new test may be required.

Our editorial-standards page contains the broader policy for corrections, complaints, conflicts, and editorial conduct.

Limitations of our testing

Rates can change after we complete a test. Card type, country, currency, denomination, format, receipt status, account tier, time of day, and bank conditions can all affect the outcome.

One testing cycle cannot reproduce every customer’s experience. App-store ratings and other third-party sources may also be incomplete, manipulated, or unrepresentative.

Our scores are structured editorial assessments based on the evidence available during a defined testing period. They are not guarantees of future rates, speed, security, or service.

Always check the visible test date and the current quote inside the platform before submitting a gift card.
